Many relationship problems are described as communication problems, but talking more does not automatically fix them. Effective communication involves timing, listening, clarity, emotional regulation and the ability to understand what the other person is actually saying.
Listen for meaning
Try summarizing what you heard before defending your own position. Ask whether you understood correctly. A surprising amount of conflict comes from responding to an interpretation rather than the message.
Practice when the stakes are low
Communication is a skill. Practice curiosity, directness and boundary-setting in ordinary conversations so those behaviors are available when a relationship discussion becomes difficult.
